Let's Go Girls!
This painting is all about reclaiming your female power. If you’ve watched America Ferrera’s fantastic monologue in the Barbie movie then you’ll know exactly what this is all about straightaway (please google it if you haven’t- it’s perfect; hilarious and completely relatable). The Frida Barbie here represents how the exuberant independent spirit of revolutionary feminist and human-rights campaigner Frida Kahlo has been appropriated by mainstream media and reduced to the caricature status of a plastic monobrow doll entrapped in a plastic box. Tethered to the oil canister, a pretty Spanish girl sits demurely in a state of domestic bliss. This vanitas painting is called ‘Let’s Go Girls!’ and it’s all about breaking free from control of the expectations and ideals of perfection that have been imposed on women, and bossing your authentic life as an empowered individual. 🍋 My signature Urgent Lemons - here also in the form of mini lemon juice sachets from a French supermarket- as usual represent light, life and love …. and here they are free! Roaming around the foreground larger than life and outta da net! In the composition you can also find my current bedtime reading, a purple jasper crystal obelisk and a house goddess by ceramic artist Charlie Russell all combine to add power and generate positivity and creativity. The sand timer ⏳ memento mori reminds us that time is short and we’re here for a good time not a long time: More importantly, the time for action, revolution and making it happen is now! Let’s Go Girls! Acrylic & Nail Varnish on deep canvas, 40x40in framed in elegant black tray frame (total size 108x108cm) . Shown at the Herbert Museum & Art Gallery Spring 2025 as finalist in the Coventry Open.
